This principle is the famous 80/20 principle. The core understanding for me is that not every thing matters, and that in fact, a lot of the time, very few things matter and not everyone knows how to use the pareto principle.
As such, it matters to really focus on what pays and ensure that we follow it to the end. Reading this principle made me really look at how I spend my day and whether all my efforts really are worth the same and I soon realized that some of the greatest achievements we make everyday does not come from all our activities.
That therefore means that it makes sense to figure out what those high stake activities that we do everyday are and try all the possible best that we can in guarding the time to do them everyday. These high stake tasks sometimes come in very important but not urgent category and we therefore always find a way to get to them tomorrow. So in essence, it matters that we consider what our options are and try the best that we can to always focus on these high stake tasks.
One of such tasks is exercise. Exercise to a lot of people is not a very urgent task but exercise is one the key things that goes a long way to improve all areas of our life. But the very urgent tasks seem to be the very important now to us that we sometimes forget the not urgent but important tasks.
When you look at the Pareto principle in a lot of areas of life, it really makes a lot of sense. Not all our activities in various areas of life lead to the same outcome. Most times, 20% of our inputs lead to 80% of the output. So it is important to find what these 20% inputs are and guard it all the time.
So in essence, in 24 hours, all you need to guard jealously is about 5 hours everyday to do things that really matter. And when you are able to find out what these tasks are, you would definitely be a better person in the end.
So in the end, not all tasks matter. Some tasks are more important than others. Do not let urgency determine the importance of tasks in your life. Take some time out to see the outcomes or successes you have achieved and what tasks have helped you come this far.
Look at your current goals and see what tasks are needed to get you there. Then spend about 5 hours a day trying to achieve these tasks because in the end, those 5 hours are what produce the highest part of your daily tasks.
