FlexiSAF: Good evening Kolade. We are excited to host you for a tweetchat this lovely evening. Can you please introduce yourself?
Kolade: Thank you very much for having me.
FlexiSAF: You’re welcome.
Kolade: My name is Adebimpe Kolade. I am an eLearning technical developer.
FlexiSAF: What is eLearning & why is it important? i.e What place does it have in our education?
Kolade: I would say eLearning involves delivering (sharing / transferring) knowledge using technology in a productive and effective way. eLearning is cost-effective…. eLearning allows for retentive learning and lots more
FlexiSAF: I see that there are different definitions to eLearning
Kolade: Yes there are quite a lot of definitions out there when it comes to eLearning. eLearning is very key when it comes to education. eLearning is an approach to education/learning that allows you to teach in a more effective way and allows you to learn in a more interactive way
FlexiSAF: Will eLearning still be relevant post Covid19? How can eLearning be integrated into learning after now?
Kolade: Yes eLearning will be very much relevant post-Covid19. The gains that will be made in the development of great eLearning solutions wouldn’t be abandoned.
Blended learning, that’s a mix of the traditional classroom learning and online learning will be of great use post-Covid19.
FlexiSAF: Good to know it’s not “taking over”
Kolade: It wouldn’t take over at least for now. eLearning would be a complementary form of learning when blended with traditional learning.
FlexiSAF: How about access issues i.e internet challenges, data costs & lack of devices? What can students/schools do?
Kolade: Access to eLearning is very much dependent on the internet. But we are in lucky times, most ISP now give access to data at a very cheap rate. eLearning platforms are also evolving to ensure there’s access with little or no internet connection.
Schools also have a great role to play when determining the type of eLearning platform they would adopt. They need to consider their capacity when it comes to how much data they can afford. How much access they have to data, and how their students would also be to access the internet
There are several ways to develop eLearning content and even deploy eLearning solutions to ensure that little amount of data is used when accessing the eLearning content.
FlexiSAF: So, we ought to watch out for such platforms without compromising on quality.
Kolade: Yes we have to. There are several underlying factors to consider when we have to decide on adopting a particular eLearning platform
FlexiSAF: From your experience, what’s the biggest challenge with eLearning?
Kolade: The biggest challenge has always been “quality content”
FlexiSAF: Do you think schools in Nigeria are ready for e-learning? And how does eLearning help with the bigger challenges of Education in Nigeria? E.g out of school kids, quality education etc
Kolade: I believe the majority of the schools in Nigeria are ready for eLearning. They just need to approach eLearning situationally!!!
A reoccurring issue with out of school kids has always been the inadequate number of teacher to student in the classroom. With eLearning, we can potentially resolve the challenge of always having teachers for kids or always having kids stay within the four walls of the classroom
FlexiSAF:… we don’t have to limit ourselves.
Kolade: With the development of great eLearning solutions, tailored specifically for this purpose, the kids can learn anywhere and anytime. The engaging and interactive aspects of eLearning are two factors that give eLearning the ability to provide quality education.
FlexiSAF: What can schools/teachers/parents do to be more involved/e-learning ready?
Kolade: This is the time for schools to pay close attention to eLearning. As I said earlier, eLearning is not meant to replace the traditional format of learning, rather complement it for the schools
Schools now need to identify the most suitable method and style that suits them. Schools need to start investing in eLearning technologies that they have identified to be the most suitable for them. Schools must be ready to train their teachers on the effective use of eLearning.
Teachers need to now pay more attention to capacity building in the area of teaching and technology. The good thing here is that the teacher already has the advantage of being able to teach. The focus for teachers should be how to use eLearning to improve on their skills. Teachers have to use eLearning to improve their instructional ability. They also need to be ready to use technology to build much more engaging content that would be curriculum-based
FlexiSAF: Yes to growth and improvement for our teachers
Kolade: The parents are also important stakeholders here. The days of buying unimportant toys for your kids might be over. More focus should be paid to getting your kids “child-based” technology devices that will enhance their stickiness to eLearning. Our kids need to get comfortable with technology at an early stage.
FlexiSAF: We need to consult with parents.
Kolade: Quality content in this instance refers to content that achieves the primary purposes of eLearning including engagement, interactivity and personalized learning.
Organizations developing eLearning content should play close attention to the learners. How do we develop content that will be engaging for these students? How do we make it personalized? How do we ensure kids can relate to eLearning characters like it were cartoon characters?
How do we ensure we create content that students will want to go back to like do for other activities? How do we ensure he students are able to learn meaningfully?
Answers to these questions will be the starting point of creating quality content focused on the users
FlexiSAF: What an amazing outcome it will be
FlexiSAF: Is eLearning in Nigeria profitable/viable? Are there Job opportunities/paths in eLearning?
Kolade: For profitability, it actually depends on the side of the divide you find yourself! For companies, developing eLearning content, it can be quite expensive. Such companies need strong business strategies to ensure ROI.
But if you can stand out as a company and develop quality eLearning solutions, the profitability is unimaginable. We have seen in recent years how some organizations and individuals have been investing a lot into eLearning companies.
For schools, I would assume profitability in this case also refers to ensuring their students learn in the very best way, so I’ll say it’s a win for them too
eLearning has quite some interesting careers. From eLearning developers to instructional designers to scriptwriters, to storyboard artists, to graphics artist, to animators, to quality assurance officers, to studio managers, to creative designers, to LMS admins etc.
FlexiSAF: A robust list…
Kolade: There are a lot of job opportunities in eLearning and the great thing here is to that you do not need to be a teacher before starting a career in learning if you take the right steps.
FlexiSAF: A question for the parents Should parents support eLearning, if yes, how?
Kolade: Absolutely! Parents should support eLearning. They can do this by preparing their children for eLearning. This would normally involve giving them access to “parental controlled” devices from a young age.
The parents can also work collaboratively with schools in ensuring the right eLearning solutions is adopted
The success of eLearning is very much dependent on the adoption of the parents.
