If you have a daughter like I do, or would love to have one in future, you probably cannot pen down the emotions you feel whenever you try to envision what you want her future to be like,   the passion and hope you have in building those great visions for her, make her feel confident, secure, empowered, you mention it.

Well, here’s some good news; Michelle Obama, former first lady of the United States, also shares your passion. Not because she also has daughters, but because she was a mother to all. Though there was more emphasis on empowering the female, even the male was included in her “American dream”.

What was the dream about?

She, Michelle said in her final speech as First Lady Of The United States;

Do not ever let anyone make you feel like you don’t matter,

or like you don’t have a place in our American story—because

you do…and you have the right to be exactly who you are.

That was the dream, to make every child feel truly worthy, believe in themselves and be able to make a positive contribution to society. And the best way to achieve that is to make sure every child had access to the proper education.The term proper education does not only entail academics, it entails the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits.

And in order to realize this dream, she knew she definitely needed the help of educators and she knew that “school counselors”, as she mentioned, will play a critical role in helping her get there. So, she introduced the counselor of the year initiative to encourage all the counselors who are taking their jobs seriously. She said;

In fact, a recent study showed that students who met with a school counselor to talk about financial aid or college were three times more likely to attend college, and they were nearly seven times more likely to apply for financial aid. So our school counselors are truly among the heroes of the Reach Higher story. And that’s why we created this event two years ago, because we thought that they should finally get some recognition. (Applause.) We wanted everyone to know about the difference that these phenomenal men and women have been making in the lives of our young people every day.”

And that’s what SAF Talk-2-Me is out to do. To make every child feel truly worthy, believe in themselves and help bring out the best in them. That can be easily achieved through an effective Guidance and Counselling system.
