Joshua’s father had never been to school, and as far as he was concerned, Joshua needn’t go to school too. Joshua would have to leave the farm in order to study, therefore, he thought school was just a waste of time and money. He was a farmer and his farm yielded a lot of produce. He was quite renowned in his town, somewhere along the outskirts of Jos, in the Northern part of Nigeria.

So, Joshua, now 15, had never set foot in the classroom even though there was a community school in his town. On a fateful day, a fight ensued between two rival clans. And suddenly, there was a break out of riots, it was so intense the people of the town had to flee. As a result, many houses and farms were destroyed, leaving many homeless including Joshua’s family.

Eventually, survival in the town became almost impossible. They were therefore moved to a nearby Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp. Now, without even the most basic education, what’s Joshua’s future going to be like?

That’s the big question,

What’s the future going to be like?

What if Joshua had been to school? What if he had been taught to have an eternal thirst for knowledge and continuous learning? If Joshua had been taught to learn how to learn, it would have been a different story. The world has changed a lot in the past 10 decades. Even markets are now digitalised. Education, at least the most basic education which is literacy, is vital for a bright future.

The likes of Joshua are many in Nigeria. UNICEF records estimates out of school children to be about of 10.5 million, quite alarmingly. The highest number there is in the world. But what are we going to do about it?

Another big question

Like former US president Barrack Obama rightly put it,

If you think education is expensive, wait until you see how much ignorance costs in the 21st century

If this trend goes on, what’s Nigeria’s future going to be like?

We have to step up, and tackle this the best way possible. To find out how we, together can make a difference and make these alarming figures a thing of the past, Subscribe to talk2me articles by filling the form below.
