Curriculum

The term Curriculum refers to the lessons and academic content taught in a school or in a specific course.
“Though its definition varies greatly on educators, curriculum typically refers to the knowledge and skills students are expected to learn, which include:

 

  • the learning standards & objectives they are expected to meet;
  • the units and lessons that teachers teach;
  • the assignments and projects given to students;
  • the books, materials, videos, presentations, and readings used in a course;
  • and the tests, assessments, and other methods used to evaluate student learning.”

 

In some institutes a curriculum includes a school’s academic requirements for graduation, such as the courses students must pass and number of credits.

What is CBA?

Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA) can be defined as any set of measurement activities that uses “direct observation and recording of a student’s performance in the local curriculum as a basis for gathering information to make instructional decisions. So a Curriculum Based Assessment would be to monitor growth and development in children’s learning by assessing the tools.

 

 

CBA split into 3;

 

For the teacher; The Coach/Examiner.
The role of CBA for teachers is to aid in testing students using several parts of the curriculum. It allows them to plan out what portions of the curriculum to include in the syllabus. Then further grants them the opportunity to measure their efficiency in imparting knowledge and how it is most effective. For the reason that CBA allows teachers to assess students performances & progress in basic academic areas, it proves to be the best way to track progress in schools. It completely simplifies the manual, tedious and very much cliche pattern of student evaluation in learning.

For the Parent; The Ever Concerned Investor.
It appeals to parents as it greatly by making available current reports & information on the development of their children in subjects they take. When your child’s teacher uses CBA, he or she finds out how well your child is progressing in learning the content for the academic year. It also monitors the success of the instruction your child is receiving. If your child’s performance is not meeting expectations, the teacher then changes the method of teaching to try to find the type and amount of instruction  needed to make sufficient progress toward meeting the academic goals of your child.

Doesn’t it suck to get tested on solely what the teacher deems most important? You’re right. It blows. This is why CBA is the next best thing for students. Not only does it allow your teacher to reconstruct his/her teaching methods or pattern to suit your learning curve, but it allows you (test taker) to get a direct assessment of your academic skills. Because sure, you get a bunch of tests and you can tell if you’re on an exponential streak or the rule of marginal utility has kicked in at mid-term.

Except, with CBA -In conjunction with a software that can monitor change in learning patterns- you will be able to tell what caused those pitfalls and also identify your areas of weakness. Thus, it will not be a constant battle of Ini-Mini-Miny-Moe’s when it comes to picking study areas of concentration. Rather, you, test taker, would have had access to tons of material to practice on, using a Computer Based Test Platform.
