The name Nelson Mandela echoes far beyond African walls. Madiba, as he was popularly referred to is no doubt among the greatest leaders to set foot in Africa. Different thoughts cross our minds upon mention of his name. From his struggle against apartheid to his strong stand for freedom and selfless love for his people and the world at large. He had a strong belief for the goodness in people, and he always preferred reconciliation over revenge.
But are these all we know? what else do we know about the great Madiba?
Did you know that he fought through thick and thin to ensure education for all in South Africa?
His Contributions for education
After he stepped down, Madiba contributed a lot to education through his foundations, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, his Children’s Foundation and his Nelson Mandela Institute.
He made sure it was done so well by connecting the business icons of the community to the teachers and children of the rural communities, so that they could get to see the impact being derived from their donations. Because the schools were all in the public sector, they had not received any special attention prior to that.
His contributions did not stop at building schools, he also had a strong passion for character development and his focus shifted to that by ensuring teachers had adequate skills needed to train the young children on the same. The foundation made a publication in 2004, known as Emerging Voices, a pioneering study of rural education from the perspective and experience of the rural poor. This study led to the emergence of Nelson Mandela Institute for Education and Rural Development, based in the Eastern Cape at Fort Hare University and which now undertakes innovative research and teacher development. I could go on and on about Madiba’s contributions.
What about you?
No doubt you also want to serve humanity but you are wondering how. The answer is Education. Like he, Madiba said
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Sadly, Nigeria has the highest number of children left to wander without education, but does that mean ignorance has come to stay? No, because we can do something about it, with little contributions of our time and resources, we can change the world by empowering the kids through quality education.
That’s what we, FlexiSAF Foundation have pledged to do, to ensure quality education is accessible to every child across Africa, but we can’t do this alone. We need you.
Join us now and be the next Mandela!
