3 Ways Schools Can Boost Student Academic Performance

School quality relies greatly on student performance–maintaining a high level of educational quality is determined by student performance. If the students succeed, the school will progress.

There’s an ecosystem that survives on excellent student academic performance, a primary indicator by which the public & educational bodies judge a school’s success. Parents also judge the quality of a school based on that indicator. This helps them to decide whether enrolling their child in the school is worth it or not.

So how do schools go about boosting student academic performance?

1) The teachers:

Teachers are important in this case, as in any case concerning learning. Researchers have consistently found that teacher effectiveness is the critical component in improving student achievementIf a school’s overall exam results are high, people think the school’s staff is effective. If a school’s overall exam results are low, they point fingers at the school’s staff inefficiency.

One important thing to point out is that in order for teachers to do their jobs and contribute to improving student results, schools need to keep training their teachers to improve on their teaching skills. Simply paying the good teachers more without providing some form of teacher development along the way, isn’t enough.

Investing in growth opportunities that empower teachers with skills that can promote effective practice to deliver the best possible instruction to every child should be of utmost importance to the schools, if at all they are to see any considerable improvement to how their students perform.

2) Technology:

A report by Stanford Centre for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE) finds that technology – when implemented properly -can produce significant gains in student achievement and boost engagement, particularly among students most at risk. But the argument is that teachers shouldn’t be replaced with technology; a more effective approach to strong gains in student achievement is to pair technology with teachers so they are better able to understand each student’s progression, figure out how best to provide real time support & revise instruction after reviewing student results.

3) The Students:

I wrote sometime back on school accountability & how the students themselves need to sharpen their study skills to achieve great results. With the help of teachers and parents, students can develop study habits with a structure that outlines time management; goal setting; selecting what, how, and where to study; taking good notes; reading; and self-testing. The younger generation of today are tech savvy, so they can use study apps in addition to what’s already on ground.
